When you have lived in a property for a number of years it is difficult to see how items you buy and acquire gradually, grow over time. Now we are all spending more time at home than ever before, it is easy to give into the temptation to make endless online purchases and more often than not, these are likely to be something to jazz up the four walls you’re currently looking at!
Whether these are practical items such as furniture or more sentimental items or keepsakes, if you end up with too many of them then your home can quickly look cluttered and messy. If you are looking to declutter your home then we’ve come up with a few pointers to get you started.
Start by freeing up space in wardrobes, chest of drawers and cupboards by giving away old clothes to charity. If you haven’t worn it in the last year then it may be time to go! It’s easy to rediscover an item and be tempted to keep it but if this has happened a number of times and it still never sees the light of day then it may be time to reconsider!
Another good way of decluttering is to try and clear surfaces. Kitchen worktops are a good example of an area that can easily become a dumping ground for miscellaneous items, which can multiply over time until they become out of control. Try to keep surfaces clear and store what you can out of sight in cupboards and drawers. Ditch any items you can to save space!
Check for duplicated items and get rid of any that you don’t need. Do you really need three different types of bottle opener? Recycle any old items and try and keep just one of everything to free up space.
Resist the urge to buy in bulk. Although items such as discounted candles can seem like a bargain you don’t need to buy 5 of them! Instead restrict yourself to one so that you don’t end up storing the remainder and letting them take up valuable space in cupboards, or worse, sitting on surface areas gathering dust!
Remember this can be a gradual process so rather than trying to do the whole house in one sitting you can always tackle a room at a time or set aside a few minutes of each day until your home gradually becomes a clutter-free zone!
